In keeping with the vision and spirit of that small group each member is still an owner in the credit union. Membership is available to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in our service area. Our vision today is to become the primary financial institution of our member-owners.
Hello friends! RRFCU wants you to be aware and we want to protect you from the latest scams. Be on the look-out for the “Sweetheart” scam. This scam typically targets our members in the 50 - 59 age range. The average financial loss from these romance schemes is between $15,000 and $20,000. That number is nearly double what it was a decade ago. The victims are mostly women who believe they are in a real relationship. The victims reside here in the United States, but the individuals responsible for the criminal activity tend to be somewhere abroad. “Love is blind”—and that is exactly what so-called sweetheart scammers are counting on. For more information on this scam and other fraud alerts visit our Security Center at http://www.rrfcu.com.

Good Morning Friends, With tax season right around the corner, we want to remind you of the correct way to enter your account number on your tax form for a direct deposit of your refund.
Good morning friends, today is data privacy day, so here are a few words from our Chief Information Officer Major companies are frequently in the spotlight regarding an information breach. However, one of the more concerning, yet less focused threats, are home computers. If a PC is infected with malware, there is risk of financial loss and information compromise. Here are a few tips to help stay safe. Keep anti-virus and anti-malware software up-to-date with frequent scans, change email and financial account passwords regularly, and do not click links or open attachments to email unless you are expecting the message. A periodic health and security checkup by your local technology services company could be of value as well, especially for small businesses that do not have internal technology resources. For more information visit ftc.gov
Be wary of online scams disguised as low rate loan offers. We as consumers have been educated on viruses, spyware and scams so professional criminals have to constantly reinvent themselves. In this new scam they have you knocking on their door. How do they do it? They offer quick loans with great rates. When you apply for their loan, you disclose your social security number, mother’s maiden name, address and other personal information. They also inform you the loan proceeds will be direct deposited, so they need your account number and the name of your financial institution. In some cases, they have requested your online banking password! There is NEVER a reason to give anyone your online password (or your debit card PIN). Know who you are doing business with. A criminal can create financial havoc for you if they have certain confidential information.

At 17 years old, Chelsea didn’t think twice about her phone bill. Her parents had made the last payment, and the account had officially been closed—or so they thought. Fast-forward six years and Norton had gotten married, changed her last name and moved to a new address. Out of the blue she received a phone call from a debt collection agency claiming she still owed the final payment on her phone bill. The phone company never correctly closed her account, making it appear that she still owed her final payment. The debt collection agency purchased this debt from the phone company, and was then able to hound Norton about the amount they claim she owed. Luckily at this time Norton worked as a debt collector, and with the help of her boss and knowledge of the industry, she knew her rights. Norton disputed the false debt, and sent certified letters stating that the final phone bill had been paid six years earlier. After having sent two letters to the agency and never hearing back Norton believed that the agency had closed the debt. As a precaution, Norton located proof of payment, and regularly checked her credit report over the years to make sure the false debt did not hurt her credit score. A few months ago, eight years after the initial contact from the first debt collection agency and fifteen years after closing the phone account, Norton received a call from yet another collection agency. Again, Norton’s false debt had been repurchased by an agency, and the process restarted. Norton has since disputed this debt and is currently waiting to hear back from the agency. How to Handle Zombie Debt This kind of debt that refuses to go away is more commonly known as zombie debt. When it comes to zombie debt, here are several things to keep in mind to best handle the situation. First and most importantly, know your rights and know the obligations of the debt collection agency from the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. • Collectors are required to be honest about the debt, as well as what will happen if the debt is not paid. • You cannot be sued over debt that has been inactive for six years. Therefore, don’t pay the collectors any money, as this will reopen the debt. • After seven years, the debt should be removed from your credit report. • If you send the collection agency a cease and desist letter, they are required by law to stop contacting you or anyone you know regarding the debt. While zombie debt can be a nightmare, the proper research and knowledge will get you through the rough situation. Focus on finding the facts and knowing your rights. Good Morning friends, here is your Monday Money Savings Tip: • Coupon like wild, untamed couponing machines. • Buy in bulk • Have a “buy price” Meaning if you see a sale, compare it to cost per unit. Reading the sale price will actually tell you how much per cent a product costs. • Coupon databases: • Buy produce that lasts longer. I stopped buying things just because they were on sale. • Research everything before you make a purchase, and avoid making impulse purchases.
Good morning friends, #TBT presents:
Good Morning Friends, Here’s your Monday Money Savings tip: There’s a gentleman who was a teacher and he and his wife were intensely paying down debt, and on the first day of his summer vacation one year, he managed to save $500 per year just by making a few phone calls. He compared their car and home insurance rates, and found that in just the couple of years it had been since they bought that insurance, rates had changed and by comparing rates with different companies, they saved several hundred dollars per year. He basically spent about two hours calling every company to whom they paid a regular payment of any kind – cell phone and internet providers, etc – and asked for lower rates. In just those hours, he knocked $500 off their required expenses for the year. This required no lifestyle change at all, just a couple hours to make a phone call. Have you tried this?

Shopping Site Promotional Memberships Please be aware, many shopping websites may offer promotions when customers place orders. As a part of the promotion you may be signed up for a membership, AND if not cancelled within a certain time, charged a membership fee. These charges may be for amounts from $99.00 to $107.17 for a yearly subscription. If you block the debit card that is tied to the site and get a new card, your new card may also be debited for the membership fee. Please make sure to contact these sites directly to cancel if you accidently signed up for any promotional membership. Free Trial Offers Please be aware when you sign up for a free trial offer, in which you pay “only shipping & handling,” the merchant should always require a cancellation. Most offers disclose this in very small writing, which may be difficult to locate. You must usually cancel the product/service within 10 to 14 days. If not cancelled, you are charged the full price of the item (which you already received) and possibly a monthly subscription fee. The best way to get your money back is to either call and cancel the service before the trial period ends and/or mail the product back and wait 30 days to receive credit from the merchant. Please be aware some products are nonreturnable and some products require a restocking fee if they are returnable
